October 2021 Wrap Up

I planned to read only spooky thrillers/horror books this month, but near the end of the month I got tired of it and wanted to back to my roots (romance) :/

Stats:

  • Read: 4 books
  • Zero 1 stars, zero 2 stars, two 3 stars, one 4 star, and one 5 star
  • Favorite book of October: Verity

Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé

This was a very gripping thriller that had a very clear and important message on white supremacy and institutional racism. I was simultaneously disturbed and engrossed while reading this book. Just like many other reviews say, it is very much inspired by Get Out and Gossip Girl! I would encourage everyone to check trigger/content warnings before picking this up, since it deals with extremely dark topics. Rating: 4 stars

Verity by Colleen Hoover

The fact that I read this in one day attests to the fact that I could not put it down and was SO engaged while reading the entire time. The premise of this thriller was so interesting, and I feel that it was executed perfectly (meaning I was scared out of my wits very often). I enjoyed the romantic subplot as well, just because I like romance in ALL genres of books. I was unsure of the plot twist at the end but ultimately I liked it. A great read for spooky season for sure! Rating: 5 stars

When No One is Watching by Alyssa Cole

This book completed my reading challenge of 50 books! I thought the concept of writing a social commentary on the horrors of gentrification explained through a thriller plot was so creative. However, the execution was not there at all. The book was barely a thriller until 3/4 of the way through, and then it completely switched gears and became crazily chaotic in a way that gave me whiplash. Rating: 3 stars

The Whisper Man by Alex North

Some parts of this were very creepy and chilled me to my core, but in the end the mystery aspect of this story was lackluster. I had expected there to be some kind of big reveal or plot twist at the end, but there was not and the whole book seemed to be anticlimactic. Rating: 3 stars
