  • Favorite book of November: The Scarlet Veil

The Scarlet Veil by Shelby Mahurin

Vampires, enemies-to-lovers done SO good, and a murder mystery done even better– this was amazing! I loved how the Serpent and Dove world expanded to add vampires and a magical island. The murder mystery kept me on my toes and had so many shocking plot twists. Mahurin does enemies-to-lovers romance extremely well, and Celie and Michal were no exception. The angst, tension, and relationship development were all so well done. I also loved seeing all the characters from Serpent and Dove. The book ends on a cliffhanger, and I can’t wait to read the sequel! Rating: 5 stars

Fangirl, Volume 3: The Manga by Rainbow Rowell and Gabi Nam

You already know what rating I’m going to give this. Come on– it’s Fangirl. One of the cutest romances ever, and now that I’m in college I feel even more connected to the story! It was adorable as always, and the art style was so good. Rating: 5 stars

The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis

I read this book all in one sitting. The discussion of rape culture makes it such an important book to read. All of the characters were morally gray and written with complexity. My favorite part was the female friendship between Alex and Peekay. So many moments in the story were emotionally charged and heartbreaking, but in the end the message offered was hopeful and optimistic. Rating: 4 stars

The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson

This was supremely boring. You would think the idea would be exciting: an assassin and prince are chasing after a princess, and neither the readers nor the princess knows who is the prince and who is the assassin. But, this intriguing element made the characterization of the two male main characters very weak. I wasn’t rooting for either of them, and the romance was also uninteresting. The worldbuilding was confusing and poorly explained, and everything felt low stakes even though it should not have been. I may continue on with the series just because I want to know who Lia ends up with. Rating: 3 stars
