May 2024 Wrap Up

I finished my first year of college this month! I chilled for a couple weeks after finals but now I’m starting my 10 week research internship. For some reason, though, I only read 3 books this month.

Stats:

  • Read: 3 books
  • One 3 star read, two 4 stars
  • Favorite book of May: The Sunshine Court

The Sunshine Court by Nora Sakavic

I was just as elated as everyone else in the fandom when I found out that after a literal decade, the All for the Game series would be continuing. This was such an emotional and raw introduction to Jean and his story. He was definitely a character who I initially didn’t care much about but came to love after finishing this book. The elements which made the last three books so well written– like the damaged main character, found family, and slow burn romance– are as alive as ever in this book. Rating: 4 stars

Jade City by Fonda Lee

(Unfortunately) it’s rare that a book with approximately one grain of romance can keep me entertained and invested, but I was thoroughly both of these things while I read Jade City. The setting and magic system revolving jade was inventive, and I enjoyed learning about the intricacies of the rival clans. The best part was the characters; they were written so humanly and with detailed nuance. I loved to love and simultaneously hate them– they just felt so real. There was plenty of action and betrayal in the book, though there were a few points where the plot was slow. Even though there was almost no romance, the themes of family were so strong and so well-written that I didn’t mind. Rating: 4 stars

Just My Type by Falon Ballard

This was very mediocre for me. The romance was kind of boring. It was supposed to be a second chance romance, but we didn’t get any actual flashbacks to their previous relationship, so there was nothing to build off of. I would have liked some scenes of when they were high school sweethearts so that I could root for the romance. Rating: 3 stars
